Alanya is a small turkish city, surrounded by orange, lemon and banana gardens, which is situated on the Southen coast of Anatolia in the feet of Toross mountains on the edge of hilly foreland, which enters the Mediterranean Sea, and is one of the most famouse holiday cities of Turkey. The distance to the nearest air-port is 120 km(Antalya), the population is about 100 tousand people, but, of course, in summer time it becomes much more numeriously because of great tourist number. The greatest advantages of the city are sandy beaches, quiet coves, low prices, not expensive but very comfortable hotels, very developed infrastructure, very active night life and great amount of sightseeings. These factors atract many tourists and also investors.
Climate conditions
The climate in this zone is subtropical mediterranean. Two seasons are destinguished here: summer and winter. The everage variation of summer temperatures is +23…+35 degree above zero; in winter time the everage temperature of air is about +10 and the lowest temperature of the sea is about +16 degree above zero.
Almost all precipitations fall in winter time, which lasts from the end of October to March.
The highest temperature of winter +24 degree was registerd in December 1980, and the lowest - -2 degree below zero in Fabruary 1983. Summer monthes are very hot. Summer season lasts from April to the first half of October. The everage temperatures are not less then +25 in the daytime and +20 at night. The best period to make a holiday is May-the first half of July and September- the first half of October. There is no rain in summer at all.
History
The first data about the city was mantioned in the 4-th century BC. In that time the city was called Korakesion, then its name was changed for Kolonores. Beeing one of the biggest harbours in that times it was also famouse by beeing shelter for the pirates which ruled on the Medeterranean Sea. To fight with pirates Roman Senate sended Pompay, who included Alanya into Roman Empire. Till now there to many things that remind about that times.
The historians say that one time Mark Antonius presented the coasts between Alanya an Syria to Cleopatra as a wedding gift , and that Cleopatra herself bathed in that waters. Till now the most famouse beach in Alanya is called Cleopatras’s.
This beach realy possesses with amazinly clear sand.
After the collapse of Roman Empire the city becomes in the power of Byzantium. Byzantium and Konniy Sultanate all the time making war with one another conquered Alanya one aftre other. Aftre the Manzikert’s fight in 1071 Alanya fall i the power of Seldjuk’, but in 1120 it was again concluded in the borders of Byzantium. After the 4th Crusade Alanya was included in Kilikiy Kingdom.
In 1221 the city was again conquered by Seldjuks, who were headed by sultan Aladdin Keykubad. He renamed the city as Alaiye, which mined noble. From that time it started financial and cultural development of Alanya. Trading with Egypt
and with the countries of former Byzantium it was developing fast and becoming reach. In that period it were constructed the most of historical monuments which we can see also today.
After invasion of Mongols in the 14th century Seldjuks’ Sultante began to loose its power in Asia. The rulers of the city were changing very often. It was going like this till 1471, when Osman Empire included Alanya in its own borders.
After beeing defeated in the 1st World War the territory of Alanya was occupied by Italian army.
Only in 1923, after the proclaiming of Tukish Republic as an independent country, Alanya becomes turkish city.
Sightseeings
The tower of Alanya is the symbol of the city. Many tourists come here only to enjoy the view of the ancient tower. It is known that the construction of the walls of tower began in the time of Roman Empire, then Bizantines made a contribution into the construction of famouse tower. But only Seldjuks’ Sultan Aladdin Keykubad totally finished its building and till now the tower keeps the look that great sultan gave her. Double walls are decored with150 small tower. All togethe the walls are 6 km long. Such tipe of construction made Alanya imperable for the pirates and enemies of the sultan. Iuch safety conditions were mandatory becouse Alanya became winter residence of sultan Keykubad.
Nowerdays outside of the walls there are ruins of the mosques and closed market-place(bazaar) and inside of the walls there the ruins of Byzantinium church.
Not far from the tower one can see a unique shipyard which was constructed in 1228 by sultan Aladdin Keykubad, it was the first shipyard constructd by Seldjuks’ on the Medeterranean Sea and also not far from it you can enjoy the view of Red Tower, hich was also constucted by Aladdin Keykubad to protect city from atacks from the sea. Its name the tower got because of colour of brick with which it was made. Till nowerdays Red Tower is one of the best examples of middle centuries’ military construction because of its high quolity of building.
Damlatash cave is famouse by its unique microclimate and stalakits with stalagmites.The age of cave is calculated as 15000 year. It is the same level of humidity there of 90-98% and the same temperature of +22 degree all the time. There is a big consentration of carbonat gas in the cave. There is ethnographical and archeological museums near by the cave.
Except of this cave there are 3 more famouse caves: Fosforlu Magarasi, in which the rocks shine because of too much concentration of phosphor in them; Kızlar Magarası, in which the pirates keeped their prisoners; Ashk Magarası, which means Cave of love.
Aytap is the historical harbour with the ruins that remind great Roman Empire, quiet bays and beaches, that is located 30 kmon the East from Alanya.
Activties
Due to its nice climat conditions bathing season lasts from April to the end of October. Sandy beaches please with their clearness. Great nuber of restoraunts and bars near sea-side give the opportunityto spend a nice time enjoying the beautifulness of the sea. Besides, the best activity for all the family is aquapark, which is also present in Alanya. There too many shops and bouiques where everybody can find somethinh for him by his own choise.Discoes and night clubs make night life active and joyfull.
